Biography

Dr. Kalpakjian is a biopsychosocial scientist and clinical and rehabilitation psychologist by training with 30 years of clinical and research experience with diverse populations of persons with disabilities resulting from injury, illness, or by congenital causes. She has particular expertise in the development of patient-reported outcome measures tailored for individuals with functional limitations and the use of qualitative and quantitative methods to develop interventions to improve health and wellbeing. Dr. Kalpakjian’s program of research focuses on the reproductive health of women with physical disabilities to promote independence, self-advocacy and healthcare equity. In addition to her role as investigator, she leads the development of the University of Michigan Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Learning Health System. In this role, she leads a team that supports diverse clinical teams in forming into learning communities, evaluating their current documentation practices, engaging in consensus building around changing and standardizing those practices, and selecting clinically relevant outcome measures to complement clinical evaluation. She has extensive experience mentoring postdoctoral fellows, medical residents, junior faculty and practicing clinicians in clinical research and is affiliated faculty in the Education and Mentoring Group of MICHR.
