U-M College of Engineering Now Recruiting Wheelchair Users 50+
The University of Michigan College of Engineering is Recruiting Participants For a Study on Wheelchair skills and Muscle Activity.
A new study from the University of Michigan College of Engineering is seeking paid participants, age 50+ years. Returning volunteers are welcomed!
Who can participate?
You may be eligible if you are age 50+ and fall into 1 of these groups:
Group 1: Manual wheelchair users
- Including those who use it:
- Part-of-the-time OR full-time
- Able to move through a short, indoor path independently
Group 2: Non-manual wheelchair users
- Must be able to use our loaner manual wheelchair independently
You may be ineligible if you have upper limb loss, injury, or prosthetics; or have significant uncorrected visual or cognitive impairment, or spatial neglect
What is involved?
- One 2-hour study visit to the U-M IOE Building or CDHW (Based on availability)
- Be measured for select measurements, including height, lean, & grip strength
- Move independently through cardboard-wall paths using a manual wheelchair (loaner chair available; rest breaks provided)
- Wear EMG sensors on your dominant arm and shoulder
- Have your movements measured via visual-audio camera recordings
- Answer questions on demographics, wheelchair use, and mobility
Participants are mailed $80 + $15 for travel/parking for completing the study.
