Organization background/mission
Founded in 1929, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves Metro Detroit by providing food, clothing, and human development programs to the people of their community. Inspired by the life and spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, they:
- tend to people's basic needs, especially the need for food,
- strive to stimulate minds and nourish spirits, and
- work to understand and address root causes of social injustice in our community.
In all they do, they seek to build alliances with others who share a commitment to this vision.
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen has multiple locations and offers a wide variety of services to Metro Detroit. There are no Detroit residency requirements; everyone is welcome. Their services include:
- Substance abuse recovery program
- Soup kitchen and Earthworks Urban Farm
- Rosa Parks children’s program
- Spiritual care
- On The Rise bakery and café (helps fund the provision of supportive programs)
Community Grants Proposed Project
The CSK Grant project involves the Capuchin Services Center on Meldrum Street in Detroit. It features a food pantry and a clothing distribution service. In addition, they are partnering with Pontiac Furniture to distribute appliances for families reestablishing households after a fire, a stay in a shelter, or survivors of domestic violence. Case management services are provided by social workers. They are also partnering with Detroit Works to assist individuals to find stable employment.
CSK is going to improve wheelchair accessibility at the Capuchin Services Center by installing ADA assistive devices (automatic opening doors and access buttons) to the main entrance doors (outer and inner doors) plus one of the lobby bathrooms.
Sustainability
CSK partners with and receives support from organizations across Michigan. The initial cost for this project would have been prohibitive without support, but this solution is now built to last. They have a good working relationship with the building’s maintenance company who will be able to provide support if needed.
