CDHW Members' work featured in Paraplegia News Online

Congratulations to CDHW members Mark D. Peterson, PhD and Carrie Pilarski, PhD who were featured in the August 2021 issue of Paraplegia News Online magazine.

The article titled "Focusing On Chronic Centralized Pain" (PDF) appeared in the research update section and describes the connection between chronic centralized pain and psychological disorders such as "anxiety; post-traumatic stress disorder; cognitive and/or mood disorders; dementia; alcohol-related disorders; substance abuse disorders; and central pain syndrome."

Peterson has been looking at this connection closely and his study findings suggest the importance of treating not only the physical health of the person with an SCI but also their mental health. Pilarski describes her work with patients with SCI and strategies she suggests to help them improve how they think about their pain experience. These strategies include changing how one thinks about their pain, using meditation for stress management, finding activities that bring you happiness, and peer support.
