Webinar Summary

Adults with Cerebral Palsy experience high rates of secondary conditions and negative health outcomes. The February 20, 2020 webinar reviewed recent research about the types of conditions they are at increased risk for and provide practical steps that patients, their advocates and their healthcare providers can take to manage health and optimize the aging process. Panelists included IDEAL RRTC faculty member Mark Peterson, Ph.D. and Heidi Haapala, M.D., clinical assistant professor in the department of physical medicine & rehabilitation. Presenters:

Dr. Mark Peterson is an Associate Professor in University of Michigan (UM) PMR and an active member in the UM Neuroscience Graduate Program, IHPI, Michigan Center of the Demography of Aging, and the Michigan Institutes for Data Science. Dr. Peterson is an IDEAL RRTC co-investigator, who works with fellow co-investigator Elham Mahmoudi to explore the interactions between personal and environmental factors that promote or inhibit healthy aging of individuals with long-term physical disabilities. Together, they lead analysis of several national longitudinal databases to explore the Identification of Protective Factors in Healthy Aging with Disabilities.

Dr. Heidi Haapala is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Michigan Medical, University of Michigan. She is also on staff as an Attending Physician with the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

This research event is organized by ICPSR, the IDEAL RRTC, and the Arc.
